What is your favorite “made up” Fall Holiday?
Oh Dear Readers! It’s…. FRY FEST today!!! FALL Fry Fest to be exact. Don’t get me wrong – I do love me my Halloween and Thanksgiving, but Fry Fest is a going on four-year tradition at the old homestead.
It started with DH passing by the turkey fryers for the “umpteenth” time at Menards or Fleet Farm and the conversation went a little like this…
DH gestures to the boxed up turkey fryers, “You know… I’d really like one of these.”
I look at the fryers, sideways at him and then back to the fryers, “How often will you actually use it?”
“Well, I figure at least twice a year…. I’ve always wanted to try a deep-fried turkey.”
“Mmm hmm… and…. so we spend $100 on the fryer and oil and…”
Interrupting me he interjects, “Well, that’d just be for holidays… I think I should hold a ‘Fry Fest’ at least once a year…”
I shrug and say, “Well, if you want it, get it.”
Yeah, it was more exciting in my head. I guess you had to be there…. ANYWAY. Fry Fest was born.
What is Fry Fest? It’s not just boring cheese sticks and corn dogs (though we’ve done those). We’ve deep-fried everything from Bluegill to Twinkies…well, perhaps not everything. We have our favorites like tempura shrimp and corn on the cob (oh yes), but every time we have Fry Fest we try to do some new things as well.
This year, the menu has on it:
- Hot Dogs
- Rum & Coke “donuts” (gluten free of course)
- Ham & Cheese Fritters (gluten free on these too)
- Chicken
- Cauliflower
- Apples
- Ribs(???)
- Cheese Sticks
- Pickles
- Rutabaga “fries”
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
- Blue-Cheese stuff olives
- Strawberries
- To Be Announced…
I’ll also be making a healthy fall salad, there will be plenty of “adult beverages” and….
*drumroll please*
DH has made a trebuchet for “Punkin’ Chunkin'”
I’ll let you know how the siege weaponry went…
