The Rainbow Connection

This afternoon I went on a date with DH.  Usually our “dates” consist of making a run to the home improvement store, but this time it was a bonafide “dinner and a movie” date.  We headed to Olive Garden and then it was off to the theatre to see the Muppets in their new movie.

The conclusion of the movie brought the singing of the song, “Rainbow Connection”.  The lyrics make more sense as I get older, particularly “It’s something I’m supposed to be”.  I think many, if not most of us, once we’ve reached a certain age or gone through certain experiences, want to know what our purpose is.  What we’re meant to be.  I have a much better idea of what my purpose is in life.  It’s not to be some genius, solving the worlds biggest problems.  I have abilities and talents that seem to come to the forefront time and time again.  While I vacillate between hard facts with cold logic and heart-wrenching sentimentality, my purpose is to be one who loves.  It’s pretty simple, but I find that there are plenty of people out there who feel none, or not enough.

Oh, I know there will be puzzled looks from some out there reading this.  I accept that.  I can’t explain it beyond… it’s just what is “right” and what I am supposed to do.  It’s part of my path in life.  Pretty cool.  And on that note, I leave you with the lyrics of “Rainbow Connection”.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it’s done so far.
What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell.  We know that it’s probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it.
It’s something that I’m supposed to be.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
